The OSH Act and 29 CFR Part 1904 prescribe that certain employers maintain records of job related injuries and illnesses. The data are needed by OSHA to carry out intervention and enforcement activities to guarantee workers safe and healthful workplaces. The data are also needed by BLS to produce national statistics on occupational injuries and illnesses.

This ICR reflects both program changes and adjustments in burden hours. OSHA estimates a total decrease of 92,235. burden hours from the currently approved estimate of 2,140,861 hours to 2,048,626 hours. There is a program change decrease of 5 hours due to the completion of the one-time survey of professional sports employers. There is 1) an adjustment decrease of the number of establishment subject to maintaining the injury and illness records; 2) an adjustment decrease of the number of injury and illness cases recorded on the OSHA forms; 3) an adjustment decrease in the number of new accounts created on the ITA; and 4) an adjustment decrease in the number of Form 300A data submissions made through the ITA. These account for a net decrease of 92,235 hours.
