The standard requires employers to monitor employee exposure to acrylonitrile (AN), to provide medical surveillance, to train workers about the hazards of AN, and to establish and maintain accurate records of worker exposure to AN. These records are used by employers, workers, physicians, and the Government to ensure that workers are not harmed by exposure to AN.

There is an adjustment decrease in the burden hour total from 2,299 to 1,999 hours, a total decrease of 300 hours. The decrease is due to a slight decrease in the number of plants associated with sectors that produce AN and AN-based materials and determining that training is no longer a collection of information. The number of workers in most sectors also decreased. There was an overall adjustment cost reduction from $146,718 to $144,628. The cost reduction results from fewer workers being covered by this standard, thus leading to reductions in both the number of exposure monitoring samples, 864 to 814, and in the number of worker medical examinations, from 630 to 594. While the cost of an individual worker medical exams did increase , this did not negate the overall cost decrease resulting from fewer worker monitoring samples and medical examination being conducted.
