The Standard requires employers to train workers about the hazards of asbestos, to monitor worker exposure, to provide medical surveillance, and maintain accurate records of worker exposure to asbestos. These records will be used by employers, workers, and the Government to ensure that workers are not harmed by exposure to asbestos in the workplace.

OSHA is requesting an adjustment decrease of 62 hours in burden going from 1,038 to 976 hours. This decrease is due to a reduction in the number of affected shipyards going from 515 to 489. Also, there was a decrease in the operation and maintenance cost for exposure monitoring and medical examinations. The agency is requesting a decrease in cost by $1,780 going from $34,639 to $32,859. This decrease is due to a decrease in the number of shipyard employees monitored and receiving medical examinations.
