This information is used to determine the compliance status of U.S. vessels, subject to SOLAS 74, engaged in international trade. Organizations recognized by the Coast Guard conduct ongoing audits of vessels' and companies' safety management systems. Respondents are vessel owners and operators and recognized organizations. The statutory authority for the requirement is in 46 U.S. Code 3203.
