This standard requires employers to develop a written respiratory protection program, provide medical surveillance, fit test employees, obtain certificates of analysis on cylinders, change sorbent beds and filters, to inspect emergency-use respirators, mark emergency-use respirator storage compartments, and maintain accurate employee records for fit testing and medical surveillance.

The Agency requests an adjustment increase of 979,905 hours, from 7,420,460 to 8,400,365 hours, as a result of updating the number of establishments and workers covered by the Standard. The Agency is also requesting a cost increase of $89,491,156.88 from $316,906,665 to $406,397,821.88 as a result of updating the number of employees covered by the Standard; and the inclusion of medical costs for those employees who will have additional medical examinations.
