The Coast Guard collects, stores, and analyzes vessel data transmitted electronically to enhance maritime domain awareness (MDA). Awareness and threat knowledge are critical for securing the maritime domain and the key to preventing adverse events. Data is also used for marine safety and environmental protection purposes.

The increase is due to recent AIS carriage requirement regulations put in place by the NOA-AIS Final Rule published on January 30, 2015.
