The Coast Guard collects, stores, and analyzes vessel data transmitted electronically to enhance maritime domain awareness (MDA). Awareness and threat knowledge are critical for securing the maritime domain and the key to preventing adverse events. Data is also used for marine safety and environmental protection purposes.

The change (i.e., increase) in burden is a PROGRAM CHANGE (increase in respondents (+5,922), responses (+533,994) and burden hours (+47,041)) results from the "Vessel Requirements for Notices of Arrival and Departure, and Carriage of Automatic Identification System" Final Rule [USCG-2005-21869; RIN 1625-AA99]. The Coast Guard amended its regulations to expand the number of vessels required to carry AIS.
