The National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) is being revised to provide coverage across all U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia. The NVDRS surveillance system captures case record information held by medical examiners/coroners, vital statistics (death certificates), and law enforcement, including crime labs.

Previously, State case abstractors incurred burden, but now they receive funding for abstraction. The number of states participating will increase from 18 to 58 due to recent funding changes.
