Abstract: NIOSH requests OMB approval to collect safety culture data from underground coal mine employees over a three-year period to continue the assessment of the current safety culture of underground coal mining in order to identify recommendations for promoting and ensuring the existence of a positive safety culture across the industry. Up to four underground coal mines will be studied for this assessment in an attempt to study mines of different characteristics.

Short Statement: As of May 1, 2012 safety culture assessments have been conducted at five coal mines. Because those assessments resulted in the collection of very valuable information a request is being made to revise the approved project entitled "Assessing the Safety Culture of Coal Mining" (0920-0835 Expiration 12/31/2012). The revisions being requested include 1) a three-year extension of the original period of performance for the project, and 2) an increase in participants from six coal mines to up to nine coal mines. The additional information that will be gathered during these additional years of performance and from up to three additional mines will provide an even greater service to the industry by contributing to the understanding of safety culture characteristics which may contribute to improved safety behaviors and thus the reduction of injuries and fatalities.
