Under 104-208 Section 658, ATF requests law enforcement officers to write a letter requesting authorization to purchase a firearm for official duties. The letter is used by a law enforcement officer to purchase handguns to be used in his/her official duties from a licensed firearm dealer anywhere in the country. The letter shall state that the firearm is to be used in the official duties of the officer and that he/she has not been convicted of a misdemeanor crime.
