Federally permitted fishing vessels in the Northeast Region of the U.S. must display their vessel identification numbers on three locations on the vessel at a specified size. The requirement is needed to assist National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Coast Guard in enforcing fishery regulations.

The number of respondents, federally permitted commercial fishing vessels, has been adjusted downward by 1,080 respondents due to the current number of permitted vessels currently listed in the permit database that are greater than or equal to 25 feet in overall length. The total number of respondents in now estimated to be 4,920 entities per year.
