Abstract: The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 enables NIOSH to do research relevant to the health and safety of workers. Aerosol transmission of infectious diseases is important to healthcare workers and emergency responders. Cough-generated aerosols are of particular concern becasue coughing is a common symptom of respiratory infections. Gaps exist in our understanding of the generation of aerosols during coughing. This hampers the ability of health scientists to model and predict the generation of infectious aerosols by coughing. This study aims to gain a better understanding of the production of aerosols by coughing, and to determine how effectively surgical masks and N95 respirators block cough-generated aerosols.
