Abstract: The authority for this program is 42 CFR Part 37. Through delegation of authority, NIOSH is authorized to provide this service to the next-of-kin of the deceased miner. The Consent, Release, and History form is used to obtain written authorization to perform an autopsy on the deceased miner. Because a basic reason for the post-mortem examination is research (both epidemiological and clinical), a minimum number of questions are essential regarding the miner, his/her occupational history, and smoking history - latter because of the strong association between chronic lung disease and smoking.
