On 7/27/00, the European Commission issued its decision that the Safe Harbor Privacy Principles developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce provide adequate privacy protection for flows of data from European countries to the United States. As part of the understanding with the European Commission, the Department of Commerce has until October 15, 2000 to set up a public list so that U.S. organizations can voluntarily self-certify their compliance with the Principles.
