Participants in the South Atlantic swordfish fisheries will be required to obtain annual permits and provide pre-trip notification for observer coverage on their vessels. Data will be used to estimate fishing effort and more accurately monitor quotas, catch, and bycatch. Under the Atlantic Tunas Convention Act, permitting allows NMFS to adhere to ICCAT recommendations including imposing annual quotas for the conservation of swordfish stocks.
