Terms of Clearance: The reinstatement of this collection of information is approved with a continuation of the terms included in the original clearance on 8/15/94. Those continuing terms are: NIOSH will record whether the background questionnaire was completed by the miner or his relatives. In any reports produced from this questionnaire, NIOSH should report the overall response rate and the percentage of returned questionnaires that were completed by persons other than the miner. Also, OMB notes that this collection of information expired 8/31/97. NIOSH shall ensure that collections of information are properly continued under the PRA in the future.

Abstract: A relationship between coal mining exposure and lung function loss has been demonstrted. Both smoking and coal mine dust exposure are associated with clinically important respiratory dysfunction. Their separate contributions to obstructive airways disease in coal miners appear to be additive. The data collected in this study will be used to provide a basis for improving the understanding of pulmonary disease processes in dust exposed workers and as a basis for intervention strategies to reduce morbidity in the coal mining and other industries.
