OMB approves this ethnographic case study contingent upon CDC following through with the changes outlined in the August 13 and 16, 1996, correspondences. In particular, CDC agrees that this case study of tuberculosis outreach worker activities will only illustrate the activities that workers perform, including their interaction with patients and other health care personnel. CDC will not, based solely on this case study, extrapolate any of the findings to the national population or make a determination of effective tuberculosis outreach worker activities.

Since the mid-1980s, tuberculosis has re-emerged as a serious public health hazard--especially among certain hard-to-reach populations such as the homeless, the poor, and recent immigrant groups. The purpose of this research is to observe the nature of outreach activities being conducted by workers that impacts upon the TB levels among specific groups deemed at greater risk for this disease.
