CONGRESS HAS MANDATED THE COLLECTION OF NATIONAL ASSESSMENT SURVEY DATA. NEW BACKGROUND QUESTIONS FOR THE 1983-84 WRITING ASSESSMENT WILL BE FIELD-TESTED DURING OCTOBER-DECEMBER 1982. THE FIELD TEST INFORMATION WILL BE USED BY NATIONAL ASSESSMENT TO GUIDE ITEM REVISION REVIEW AND SELECTION FOR THE FULL-SCALE ASSESSMENT.
